can you try the moniter on a different pc? that'll let you know if it's the moniter.
Certainly open and clean the tower, clean all the connections, re-seat everything and plug it all back in. It can't hurt, and every now and then it fixes stuff.
If you get a vidio card, make sure it's compatable with your processor, your available slot, your moniter and your OS.
